I started using PiNT with an HP scanner attached to a Sparc. It worked well,
although the user-interface isn't wonderful (I did write a curses-based
front-end but ...). I stopped using PiNT when I moved to 1.3 because it
locks up the (Sparc) kernel on bootup. I'm trying to track this down.

Yes, they will. I'm using Sane 0.70 with no problems - no patches needed.
I haven't tried the latest version yet (0.72) and I've only tried it with
an HP scanner on a Sparc.

As far as I can see, PiNT has stopped being developed (please correct me if
I'm wrong). I don't see this as a reason why your Ricoh support couldn't be
added though. Maybe it would spur other people to fix/extend PiNT. However,
is it worth continuing to push PiNT if SANE is available? Then again, I'm
not sure how many people have scanners attached to their NetBSD machines -
only a handful I'd guess - not that that really matters I suppose.
