Uhhh... NetBSD/i386 runs on the x86-class CPUs, including the Pentium :-)

For space? On my Pentium laptop:

icky (thorpej) ~ 103% df
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/wd0a 39271 13412 23895 36% /
/dev/wd0e 197951 56241 131812 30% /usr
/dev/wd0f 1031389 444566 535253 45% /local
mfs:19 7919 9 7514 0% /tmp
kernfs 1 1 0 100% /kern
procfs 4 4 0 100% /proc
fdesc 1 1 0 100% /dev

That has X, a full source tree, full build, emacs, etc.
