Dunno if it is any help, but I use a Etherlink III 3c5x9 card with our 
NetBSD-1.2 machine. I had to disable auto-detection and force it to UTP, 
and then use 
inet CrAnBerRy 0xffffff00 1.1.1.255 link0 link1
in hostname.ep0. (link0 link1 to tell NetBSD to use UTP).
