        I really hate to bother everyone with another one of these,
but "it won't boot". "It" is a 486DX-40 motherboard, Adaptec 1542CP
SCSI adapter, and a Seagate ST51080N SCSI drive. The symptom is the
usual one -- after copy_kernel and reboot, it hangs after indicating
that it's about to boot into NetBSD.

        Some interesting numbers: the boot messages tell me 4826/4/109.
The version of fdisk that's invoked from a RedHat Linux install tells
me 1030/64/32. The 4826/4/109 matches the drive specs, with the exception
that the specs say, "Sectors per track (average) 109". Even more
interesting is that neither 4826 * 4 * 109 ( == 2104136) nor 1030 * 64 * 32
( == 2109440) match the number of sectors the specs report, 2109840.
I have the sneaking suspicion that these discrepancies point at the
root of the problem.

        Does anyone have any helpful words? The FAQ didn't seem to be
much help except to indicate that it might be a geometry translation problem.
I looked at the configuration of the 1542, and I could toggle something that
said, "Extended BIOS translation for >1 Gig drives," but that didn't help.

        Help is, as always, much appreciated. If it turns out to be
something that might be useful for the FAQ, I'll try to write up a coherent
explanation and submit it.
