This depends on what you are looking for. If you crank the MTU up
then you reduce the packet overhead when you are tranferring a lot of
data. The lose is that your interactive response will go down
markedly when the transfer is happening because the large packets take
a significant time to transfer to your small packets will be delayed
significantly. Using a small MTU will slow large data transfers
because the overhead will be higher but your interactive sessions
should stay more responsive during the transfer.

It all really depends on what you want to use your link for and choose
the MTU that suits that usage.
