Some time since 960510 something has happened to the kernel that makes
ifconfig fail with ENOPERM - SIOCAIFADDR, when trying to assign an address
to the interface.

I have looked around a bit in the source code for the kernel and found
that this is probably due to that the socket that ifconfig uses doesn't
have the SS_PRIV flag set. I cannot understand why.

I have tried a lot of combinations of arguments to ifconfig, single
user mode, but nothing works.

The problem seems to be related to the kernel, since an old kernel with
an ifconfig program compiled from todays SUP seems to work.

Any idea of how to fix this should be very appreciated.

Best regards,

Jonas Lagerblad
