i've installed the 386 port of NetBSD 1.1, but i'm unable to get it to
boot from the hard drive. NetBSD is sharing the hard drive with DOS,
and i'm using os-bs as a boot manager.

i suspect that the problem may have something to do with IDE drive and
controller setup. i've got a 1gb drive, and an in-board IDE
controller. there is a secondary EIDE controller with on-board BIOS
that provides LBA mode for high capacity drives. there are no drives
connected directly to this controller. pfdisk shows a different
geometry for the drive than specified by the manufacturer (or is
detected by NetBSD), so i assume that the secondary controller is
doing some kind of geometry translation. i provided the geometry
reported by pfdisk during the installation.

the initial portion of the installation had no errors. as i only have
one floppy drive, i then rebooted from floppy (again, with no
unexpected error messages) and copied the kernel to the hard drive.
when i tried to reboot from the hard drive, i got the boot prompt.
after hitting return, however, nothing happened. there was no
indication of disk activity. i rebooted from floppy, and a friend who
already has NetBSD installed on his machine took a peek at the NetBSD
partition of the hard drive. as far as he could tell, the file system
looked okay and it appeared as if the kernel had been copied
correctly.

any ideas?

thanks.
