Did you try a FreeBSD kernel ? If you could boot one fron floppy, and
see how the cdrom get probed, this could help.

You could also try to replace the
  case PHASE_CMDOUT:
with 
  case WDCI_CMD:
but i fear that that breaks other cd-roms.
