multiconnector 3c509 cards need to have the thinnet port enabled using
the 3com setup disks before it will work.  if the bnc or aui ports work,
then that is the problem.

Is "mars.pg.net" in your /etc/hosts file?  And shouldn't it just be 'mars'?
And do you have an /etc/resolv.conf file?
