It's entirely possible that that poor little 3c503 (and, if it's the same 
3c503 I know so well, insert "really old" in the description :-) just 
can't keep up with the amount of traffic hitting it.  If your using 
ifaliases, I'd guess you're running a WWW server (well, I happen to 
*know* you're running a WWW server :-).  I'd suggest purchasing a better 
ethernet card ... perhaps one of those slick DEC PCI ethernet cards... :-)
