i'm guessing from the include files (resolv.h) that the timeout
on the 1.0 nameservice resolver is 5 s.  i think that's a little
too short for me - i get a lot of "unknown host" errors in some software.

is there a way to increase it without recompiling the kernel?
(could this become a sysctl thing?)
