I've been working on a project where tar is involved. I need to
figure out the format of tar files.

man 5 tar (on a 4.3 system, but, strangely, not on my NetBSD-1.0 machine) will
give you the BSD version. I don't know where to find the System V version,
but it is fairly close.

Why did you send this to -ports? What does the tar format have to do with
porting the kernel?
