This was previously answered -- but i accidentally deleted the 
messagee i meant to keep it.

	The SIIG Multi/IO card (VL-bus) causing display problems at
	kernel load time and continuing throughout use.  NOTE: this
	only happens on my console, not on my dumb terminal.

	But we can all applaud the fact my kernel hath finally compiled.
	I appreciate all those who helped me along that trail...one last
	problem...until next time.
