Is there a "religious" problem about using something like /etc/issue,
   like most SYSV systems ?  It seens to me something more practical than
   editing gettytab, which (IMHO) should be used only for strange
   setups, like initializing strange terminals, etc.

No, but the only argument you've given in favor of it is essentially
religious.
