I had your problem (probing of 4th floppy drive during autoconfig
screwed up my display) with an SiiG I/O and IDE board.  The workaround
(for me) was to do something that spat a lot of output to the display
(what I did was mdir a: without a floppy in the drive).  The fix, if
you can build a new kernel, is to change the line which says

fd*	at fdc? drive ?

to

fd0	at fdc0 drive 0

in your kernel config file, and build a new kernel (this assumes that
you only have one floppy drive).
