Both of you have something in common: SB16s.  There is probably
something wrong with the SB16-specific DMA support in
sb.c/sbdsp.c/whatever.

I find that loading LKMs in rc.local is a BAD IDEA if you boot with a
kernel that is not /netbsd.  modload links against the wrong kernel
image, and things go downhill from there.  If I have to boot with a
kernel other than /netbsd, I boot single-user and move the kernel I
booted with to /netbsd before starting the multiuser boot.
