Actually at one time I had created a small (1-2Mb) partition on wd0 with
my DOS partition which had boot blocks and a kernel.  The kernel
had wd1 compiled in as the root device.  wd1 was not in BIOS for
political reasons and it worked like a charm.  This was quite a bit ago
(circa May94), but it may still work...
