ok it doesn't get to /etc/rc.. same problem when running single user.

It is also the exact same config as a couple of dx4-100's that I've set 
up and none of them seem to have this problem?

yes it is the GENERIC-BT kernel.

yes it does still work under the Adaptec card (with the generic-aha & 
other aha kernels)
