this specific problem is fixed, but i still see regular hangs during
boot on this specific machine (thinkpad a485, zen1/raven ridge.)

it doesn't always hang, and sometimes it even will let X to start up
with some timeouts reported.  unfortunately, the hang is hard and i
so far don't know what is up.
