Is there a way to control the resolution of video console?

The HDMI/DVI output worked until the kernel started booting and changes
 the screen resolution.

My VGA monitor died - possibly from the same abuse,
and the only VGA monitor I have left (5" monochrome) while it can
display the BIOS flash screen and loader output, gets completely hosed
 when kernel changes resoltution.

At this point the box is turned off as it crashed and with no working
monitor for it, I cannot debug anything.
