 Everyone should note that the "you" there was generic, feel free to
 comment...
 
   | Not that I get to vote, but you have sold me on manual page #1.
 
 The more I think about it the more I think that #2 is better - the
 functions remain thread safe (even async signal safe, probably) that way.
 That wouldn't matter to any current user of them, but is better I think.
 
 I will wait a few more days for anyone else who wants to comment to do so
 (go read the PR if you missed the initial discussion.)
