Update to include the fix I just committed, that was a
truly stupid attempt to make read run a few microseconds
faster, but meant it only ever used the shell's IFS
instead of one that was in the environment.   When I
did that (which actually wasn't very recent - just had
never been committed) I must have had my brain switched
off (and obsiously never tested it).

I'll make sure the sh ATF tests check for things like
this in the future (a little later).
