 So yes: unlike what I said it does not look like I needed those additional changes of mine.
 
 Loading the module only, it seems like it works.. *sometimes*
 
 (I think about 1 out of 4 to 6 tries so far.)

 I have not been successful in reproducing the issue using the serial console (about two tries.)  Neither was I able to start X this way, but I assume this is how the system should work (I forgot the message: `couldn't connect to Xserver' or something.
