several related issues in this area - it is even possible
that this is already fixed in uncommitted changes.

Yes, that's fine - I already know what the issue is/was.
What you didn't say however, and would be good to know,
is which version of sh your're using? What does
NETBSD_SHELL contain, and which release or approx HEAD
date does it come from?
