After a discussion with Joseph, it appears that in 9.99.92 nouveau did not
attach to his graphics card. Disabling nouveau via userconf allowed him
to boot successfully with 9.99.93.
Copied from one of his photographs of an unsuccesful 9.99.93 boot:
nouveau0: info: DRM MM: using COPY for buffer copies
kern info: [drm] Supports vblank timestamp caching Rev 2 (21.10.2013)
kern info: [drm] Driver supports precise vblank timestamp query
nouveau0: info: [drm] Cannot find any crtc or sizes
kern info: [drm] Initialized nouveau 1.3.1 20120801 for nouveau0 on minor 0
panic: cnopen: no console device
