 that would do it
 
   |  No dealing with tabs, AFAICS.
 
 see tset(1) ... setting the tabs is something
 it does.
 
 for the variable performance, it would make all
 the difference which order you used to widen the
 xterm and become root
 
 widen first, no problems, root first, bad tabs
 after widening
 
 Anyway, this is all solved now.
