The underlying issue has nothing to do with etcupdate or sdiff, that
much is clear. There's something else going on, which might be
related to xterm settings (perhaps how it is configured in the resources
database, or something like that).
It appears that sometimes, somehow, the xterm gets tabs set up to
column 80, and no more after that (which results in the next one appearing
to go to just before the final column as RVP indicated vt100's do .. I
no longer remember those things at all).
Certainly setting oxtabs while doing this is a fairly simple workaround,
but there is something else happening.
Hauke, try a full reset from the middle button (by default anyway) menu
after resizing the xterm, see if that makes any difference.
