 Actually, this might be an xterm bug.   I was testing HEAD in a DomU, then
 I shut it down, and ran the same test in the underlying xterm, from a
 MUCH older system (the printf variant of this, that's easier, needs no
 additional data).
 
 Same issue, with -oxtabs the first 'b' is at the right margin (the 2nd one
 wraps), with oxtabs, all is fine.
 
 Note this is an OLD xterm ...

 Perhaps there was an old issue, which was fixed, then the fix got lost
 in a recent update -- it appears as if xterm was updated in July.
