Martin,
I've given the installer image you linked try and it still appears that tar exits with an unexpected end of file at 28%
on the base set. I tried to download the sets via ftp as well as via the RRD43 (a bit suspicious of the drive but it seems reliable).
I believe the hardware to be fine as 8.2 has no issues with installation or function.
