sorry hosed the machine already. laptop is an Asus that is at least 10 years old.

it seems this is a perennial problem with the BSDs. the wifi can't be configured automatically to connect to AP and get ip address. i have to configure by hand the wpa_supplicant.conf and rc.conf files in /etc. then it works.

btw, all linux distros have no issues just to let you know it's not a hardware thing or a wifi remnant thing.

install netbsd again.

manually configure wifi settings in /etc/wpa_supplicant and  /etc/rc.conf files.
