sorry hosed the machine already. laptop is an Asus that is at least 10 years old.
>Description:
it seems this is a perennial problem with the BSDs. the wifi can't be configured automatically to connect to AP and get ip address. i have to configure by hand the wpa_supplicant.conf and rc.conf files in /etc. then it works.
btw, all linux distros have no issues just to let you know it's not a hardware thing or a wifi remnant thing.
>How-To-Repeat:
install netbsd again.
>Fix:
manually configure wifi settings in /etc/wpa_supplicant and /etc/rc.conf files.
