After about half a day or so compiling pkgsrc, random processes start to fail with the message "_lwp_ctl: Cannot allocate memory"
tar: _lwp_ctl: Cannot allocate memory
checking with ktruss, this error indeed comes from _lwp_ctl in libc (my guess) startup code.
The system remains wedged in this state with plenty of free memory. Instead of tar, the affected command may also be pkg_info, perl, pkg_admin, etc while others remain unfazed. One time perl didn't start but vim and g++ were happy to compile some c++. Swap is unused.

During one run, this message showed up, but it's not clear if they're related:
autoconfiguration error: xcall(cpu0,0xf0008ea4) from 0xf000ba00: couldn't ping cpus: cpu1
The second CPU seems to work, work scheduled on it was processed fine.
