I've been running NetBSD 8.x (currently 8.1_STABLE) on a T420 for the
past year-and-a-half (it's one of the machines I test pkgsrc updates
on), and I've never experienced an X crash when running various WMs and
DEs. (But, read on below regarding LXDE, specifically.)
You say you're using a T500. This laptop may have a dual graphics card
setup: discrete ATI plus integrated Intel. Is this the case with your
machine? If so, have you tried disabling the ATI graphics? (Having said
that, I have no idea how libreboot differs from regular BIOS
capabilities in this regard.) From looking at the X.org logging output
you posted, it seems it's only seeing the Intel chip, but I'm not sure
what else could be going on.
The screen shots you originally posted may have more relevant
information, that is, the green kernel output above the X.org logging,
but that's too blurry to read: do they pertain to the graphics hardware
(i.e. DRM)? It might help if you posted full dmesg output after the
point X crashes.
Now, I can reproduce specific issues with LXDE. On that same T420 and
8.1_STABLE, I don't get X crashes, but I do get freezing, which may
relate to a problem with the DRM stack. On another machine (Dell E6230,
running 9.99.42 presently), LXDE works more reliably, but it also can
freeze if I open two lxterminal instances in close succession. (I
rarely have occasion to open two terminal instances, and don't usually
run LXDE.) I wasn't able to reproduce any issues running xfce4-terminal
on openbox, nor with Xfce.
(Right before LXDE freezes on my T420, I get a lot of the following
errors logged by the kernel:
DRM error in __gen6_gt_force_wake_get: Timed out waiting for forcewake to ack request.
I haven't had time to look into the details of this.)
I'd suggest trying another WM or DE. I regularly use Xfce and
Enlightenment 16 on my T420, and have never experienced any major
issues. The same goes for MATE, though that's a bit "heavier" to build
and run.
Regards,
Dave
