I simply tried again without changing the kernel, and let it run. It
eventually completed. (straw clutching: could kern/53124 also apply
 to zfs - 4 cores 8 threads)

 Back to the PR:

 # zfs list -t snapshot
 NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT
 bpi/pkgsrc@orig 47.4M - 403M -
 # zfs diff bpi/pkgsrc@orig

caused a freeze with nothing appearing on the console. Of course
this box doesn't even have a serial header on its motherboard.
