 I built a kernel from today (failed) and one from Jan 1 (failed as well).
 
 So perhaps it's related to a monitor change and not the source code.
 
 I tried going back further in time, but building a kernel with current
 tools is really hard - the first problem is -Werror, since even the
 Jan 1 2019 kernel doesn't compile with that.
 
 The Jan 1 2018 kernel has additional problems with -current tools:
 
 ld: unrecognized option '-Wl,-z,relro'
 ld: use the --help option for usage information
 
 So I retract the statement that it's a recent problem, but would still
 like to see it fixed. Black-screen console is not very useful :(
