For some time now, but not forever (i.e. probably in the last two months or so)
the boot process on this machine changed: at some point the display just switches
to black and the monitor reports that there is no signal coming.

When in this state, when I run 'startx' via a remote login, I get a working X server.

Previously I had a graphical console that was working fine, and a working X server.

This also happens when booting in single user mode.

It doesn't happen when I 'userconf disable' radeon* and radeondrmkmsfb0*,
then I get a working text console (haven't tried X).
