 I have no clue why previous tests did not work, but...
 
 I upgraded my kernel (and modules) overnight to 7.99.75, and the volume 
 of /dev/speaker is back to its previous levels.
 
 Furthermore, the quality of the sound produced is excellent, with no 
 discernible "hum".
