 It seems like this problem has been fixed, i.e.,
  ./build.sh -j 6 -U  -m ia64 release
 will complete successfully now, with object files actually going in the
 obj/ directory.
 
 I was told this change may have been the cause of the fix

 From my perspective this PR can be closed.
