 Most likely it wasn't enabled, then; if it was enabled and not working
 I'd expect it to crash/blow up.

 So that probably means there's some patch in native that ought to get
 merged into the pkgsrc X server. That or maybe the native X server is
 older and doesn't try to enable acceleration at all...
 
 Can you provide the X server startup output for the native X server
 (that doesn't crash)? It would probably be useful to see whether it
 fails to enable acceleration, doesn't try, or what.
