 OK, being able to read clearly helps: it is not /dev/console that is missing
 but drmkms failing (cnopen: no console device).
 
 I added
 
 userconf=disable nouveau*
 userconf=disable nouveaufb*
 
 to the /boot.cfg file on the usb stick and then was able to get into
 the installer.
