 Scratch that - I guess installboot(8) registers the second stage 
 bootloader's inode? 
 
 Switching out /boot is not enough, I needed to run installboot against 
 it, and then got a "Data Access Exception" with the 3.1.1 bootxx / 7 
 /boot combo, too.
