 I captured console on a failing boot:
 
 wd0 at atabus0 drive 0
 ahcisata0 port 0: SERR 0x0
 wd0: IDENTIFY failed
 ahcisata0 port 0: SERR 0x0
 wd1 at atabus1 drive 0
 ahcisata0 port 1: SERR 0x0
 wd1: IDENTIFY failed
 ahcisata0 port 1: SERR 0x0
 
 So the drive is detected, but fails to talk.
