 Maybe we should even do something more radical and follow Plan9 completely
 (in make) by eliminating all size limited path name buffers?
 
 Should not be too hard, and conceptionally make has no purpose to know about
 varying and arbitrary path limits.

 P.S.: but I understand you are looking for a quick/interim solution to get
 things going, that is fine too.
