 Shouldn't you be using dial-out device?
 
 E.g. I use cu -l /dev/dtyU0 -s 9600 with
 
 uplcom0 at uhub1 port 1
 uplcom0: Prolific Technology Inc. USB-Serial Controller, rev 2.00/3.00, addr 2
 ucom0 at uplcom0
 
 to talk to serial consoles of my headless machines.
