Does this happen only with tar extracting files, or do any other
things that emit files exhibit the same behavior? Other versions of
tar?
Also, if you're in a position to try, can you ktrace it to find out
what size chunks tar is using to write the affected files?
(and what's the nfs server? netbsd?)
