 this PR is still open.
 
 I'm upgrading to 6.1 and (at least in that sw-tree) this problem has 
 been addressed and fixed in a completely other way.
 
 I've tested the version from 6.1-Release some minutes ago and no panic 
 occurs.
 
 So, if the fix added in 6.1 will be in 6.0 and 5.x too, I think this PR 
 can be closed.
 (And I think I remember that I've seen this fix in the 5.x tree too, but 
 I'm not shure anymore.)
