I will look at this (I am away sailing for a couple of weeks so can't do it 
right away)
I think it is a good idea to use the pad(4) device, which did not exist at the 
time
that bthset was written..

is it possible to modify the pad(4) driver to handle the type translations 
internally?
since the kernel does have some encoding conversion capability already..
