 I have determined that the problem was caused by my upgrade.
 
 Apparently, the format of the wtmpx file has changed in 6.0.  Unfortunately,
 last(1) tries to detect the file format by reading the first few records,
 then skips to the end to read the most recent data.  Across an upgrade, these
 don't match, and last(1) gets confused.
 
 I fixed this on my system by doing a "newsyslog -F" to force log rotation.
 
 If not already there, this should be mentioned in the 6.0 upgrade docs,
 or maybe even put into the postinstall scripts.
