I can confirm the same (i386 install cd hangs, amd64 ok) for Optiplex
755, Optiplex 760, Optiplex 780 and Optiplex 990. i386 install cd
works for Optiplex 620 and Optiplex 745.
Interestingly while most 760's fail, while I was testing just now I
found 1 760 that worked with i386 install cd. Looking to see what was
different about this machine -- at one point it ran windows xp so its
bios sata operation setting had been changed from the default AHCI to
ATA. Setting it back to AHCI gets the hang. I haven't tried the same
test on the other machines.
