Yes but the zzz(8) is kind of legacy command (involves also more untested
code).

This sounds like a panic somewhere during the suspend sequence. If you don't
have remote debugging capabilities, it could be hard to catch that though.
I'd personally try to disable as many devices from userconf(4) and try
again. If it works, it is a driver-problem.
