 For the record, I can reproduce the problem on a real 486 machine,
 but unfortunately not with the (easier to debug) equivalent qemu
 run:
 
 qemu -machine type=pc -cpu 486 -d cpu_reset -nographic wd0.img
 
 (after "anita install http://nyftp...."; of a NetBSD daily i386 snapshot)
